The Defiant was built on a theory that did not survive contact with the enemy: a fighter with no forward firing guns at all, relying instead on a four gun powered turret behind the pilot. It worked spectacularly over Dunkirk while German pilots still mistook it for a Hurricane, then went badly wrong once they learned to attack from below and ahead. Withdrawn from day fighting after heavy losses in the Battle of Britain, it found its proper role as a night fighter and became the most successful RAF night fighter of the 1940 to 1941 Blitz.
