The Supermarine Spitfire entered RAF service with No. 19 Squadron at Duxford in 1938, and the early Mk I, with its two-bladed propeller and flat canopy, became one of the defining fighters of the Battle of Britain. The Mk IIa followed in late 1940 with a more powerful Merlin engine and a three-bladed propeller, showing how quickly the airframe evolved in its first years. Airfix released this boxing in 2011, adding an extra sprue and canopies to its Spitfire Mk Ia tooling so either version can be built.
