Description
AIR04016-7 - Airfix 1/72 AC-47 Gunship - WWHP111740
Preowned, Original seal, Mint
The Douglas AC-47 was the first fixed-wing gunship fielded by the U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam War, a C-47 Skytrain (the military DC-3) fitted with three side-firing 7.62mm General Electric miniguns mounted to fire from the port side of the fuselage. Flying in a slow left-hand orbit, it could blanket a target area with overwhelming fire while loitering for hours, earning the call sign "Spooky" and the nickname "Puff, the Magic Dragon" from the ground troops it supported. Fifty-three were converted, the first flying in Vietnam in late 1964, and the type laid the groundwork for the later AC-119 and AC-130 gunships.
