The F4U Corsair's inverted gull wing was a direct consequence of its engine — the 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp drove a propeller so large that conventional landing gear would have been impractically tall. Initially rejected for carrier operations by the US Navy, the Corsair went on to become one of the most capable fighters of the Pacific War, serving with the USMC, USN, and Royal Navy through to the end of hostilities.
