The Douglas DC-8 was Douglas’s first jet airliner and the main rival to Boeing’s 707. In October 1955 Pan American launched both programs with one historic order for 707s and DC-8s, a decision that helped open the jet age. The DC-8 first flew in May 1958 and entered service in 1959. Pan Am used its DC-8s on long-range international routes alongside its 707 fleet, in the classic early-jet livery of white upper fuselage, blue cheatline and bold “Pan American” titles. The DC-8 also had a long Canadian career with Trans-Canada Air Lines, later Air Canada, and with Canadian Pacific Air Lines.
