The Bristol Scout D was a single-seat rotary-engined biplane that entered RFC and RNAS service in 1916 as the most-produced variant of the Scout family. Though lightly armed and never a dedicated fighter, it was fast for its day and saw service as a scout and escort aircraft on the Western Front and at sea, with several prominent early aces flying the type. Captain Lanoe Hawker earned the first Victoria Cross awarded for aerial combat while flying an earlier Scout C variant.
