The Admiral Graf Spee was a German Deutschland-class "pocket battleship" (Panzerschiff), a heavily armed cruiser combining six 28cm guns with diesel propulsion for long-range commerce raiding. Operating in the South Atlantic at the start of the Second World War, she was engaged by British and Commonwealth cruisers at the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939 and scuttled off Montevideo shortly after. Her short but dramatic career made her one of the best-known German warships of the early war.
