Z-17 Diether von Roeder was one of six Type 1936 destroyers built for the German Kriegsmarine, launched in 1937 and named after a First World War torpedo-boat commander. Armed with five 12.7cm guns and quadruple torpedo mounts, she spent the early war laying minefields off the German and English coasts and inspecting neutral shipping in the Skagerrak. During the German invasion of Norway she was committed to the attack on Narvik, where she was damaged in the First Naval Battle of Narvik on 10 April 1940 and then lost three days later in the Second Battle against the British battleship HMS Warspite and her destroyers, run ashore and finished off after her guns were knocked out.
