Kurt Tank's Fw 190 arrived over the Channel in 1941 and gave the RAF a genuinely unpleasant surprise, outclassing the Spitfire Mk.V in almost every respect except turn rate. The BMW 801 radial made it tough, and the wide track undercarriage made it far easier to handle on the ground than a Messerschmitt. The A-4 added the FuG 16Z radio and the tall fin aerial mast, and served on both fronts as well as against the American daylight bomber streams.
