The Gebirgsjäger were the Wehrmacht's specialist mountain infantry, trained for combat in alpine terrain and extreme weather conditions. The 1st Mountain Infantry Division "Edelweiss," formed in 1938, was the most prominent of these formations, taking part in the invasions of Norway, the Balkans, and Crete, before serving in the Italian campaign and the Battle of the Caucasus. Their distinctive edelweiss badge and mountain warfare expertise made them one of the more recognisable elite formations of the German Army.
