Dornier designed the Do 22 in the mid-1930s as a tough, multi-role three-seat aircraft for smaller air forces. It was a high-wing monoplane powered by a Hispano-Suiza twelve-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, and it could fly on floats, skis or wheels. The Royal Yugoslav Navy bought it first, and eight of its aircraft escaped to Egypt in 1941 to fly coastal patrols under the RAF. Greece and Finland also flew the type, but apart from the prototype the Do 22 never wore Luftwaffe markings.
