VEN275 - Ventura 1/48 Israeli Avia S-199 - WWHP113810
Preowned, Resealed, Mint
After the Second World War, Czechoslovakia kept building the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-14 as the Avia S-199. Because the original Daimler-Benz engines were in short supply, Avia fitted the Junkers Jumo 211F bomber engine instead. It turned the propeller in the opposite direction, and the heavy, high-torque combination gave the S-199 the vicious handling it became known for. Its pilots nicknamed it the “Mezek,” or mule. In 1948 the new State of Israel bought S-199s from Czechoslovakia, and they became the first fighters of the Israeli Air Force (Chel Ha’avir), flying with No. 101 Squadron during the War of Independence. This Ventura kit from New Zealand builds an Israeli S-199 as it flew in July 1948.
