The Sukhoi Su-6 was developed as a rival to the Ilyushin Il-2 in the armoured ground attack role, and by most measures it was the better aeroplane: faster, more heavily armed and better handling. Its problem was the engine. The M-71 radial never reached reliable mass production, and by the time the two seat version was flying well in 1943 the Il-2 was already coming off the lines in enormous numbers. Sukhoi received a Stalin Prize for the design, but only prototypes were built.
