Germany built its light armoured car family through the 1930s on the four wheel drive Horch 801 chassis, trading protection for agility in the reconnaissance role. The Sd.Kfz.222 redesigned the Sd.Kfz.221 hull to take an open topped faceted turret with a 2 cm KwK 30 automatic cannon and a coaxial machine gun, with wire mesh grenade screens over the top. Production began in 1936, and the mid version brought the larger 3.8 litre Horch engine, a revised suspension and hydraulic brakes. Reconnaissance battalions used them on the Western Front, in Russia and in North Africa until the end of the war.
