The T-84 is Ukraine's primary main battle tank, developed at the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) as an evolution of the Soviet T-80UD. First built in 1994 and entering Ukrainian Armed Forces service in 1999, it is powered by a 1,200hp 6TD-2 opposed-piston diesel engine giving it one of the highest power-to-weight ratios of any contemporary MBT. The T-84 features a new welded turret, Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour, and the Shtora-1 active protection system. A small number of the more advanced T-84 Oplot variant, with a western-style turret bustle and separate ammunition compartment, entered Ukrainian service from 2001.
