The KV-1's 76.2mm L-11 gun proved poorly suited to destroying concrete fortifications during the Winter War against Finland, so a much larger turret mounting the 152mm M-10 howitzer was fitted to the same hull. The first version carried a tall seven-sided turret and is known as the KV-2 Model 1939 or "big turret" type, differing in many details from the later standard production turret. The result was extremely top-heavy, and the turret could only be traversed reliably on level ground.
