The Type 90 is Japan's primary main battle tank, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to replace the ageing Type 61 and Type 74 in service with the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force. Development began in 1974 and the design was finalised in 1990, with the tank entering service that same year. Armed with a licence-built Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore gun and featuring composite armour and an autoloader, the Type 90 serves primarily with the JGSDF's armoured units in Hokkaido.
