The 2K12 Kub, known to NATO as the SA-6 Gainful, was a mobile low to medium altitude surface to air missile system carried on a tracked chassis, with three missiles on a rotating launcher and a separate radar vehicle working alongside it. Developed through the 1960s and fielded from 1967, it made its name in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, where Egyptian and Syrian batteries inflicted heavy losses on Israeli aircraft and forced a rethink of Western defence suppression tactics. Its mobility and frequency agility made it a difficult system to counter.
