USS The Sullivans (DD-537) was named to honour the five Sullivan brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, who were lost together when light cruiser USS Juneau was sunk at Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. Originally designated Putnam, the ship was renamed in their memory before commissioning on September 30, 1943. She served throughout the Pacific — plane guard for fast carriers, shore bombardment, and anti-kamikaze picket duty off Okinawa — earning nine battle stars in WWII and two in Korea. She is preserved as a museum ship in Buffalo, New York.
