Trumpeter released this kit while the Chengdu J-10 was still an official secret, working from rumour, satellite imagery and a handful of grainy photographs, which is why the box says nothing more specific than "Chinese New Fighter". The real aircraft is a single-engine delta canard with a chin intake, flown as a prototype in March 1998 and not publicly acknowledged by Beijing until 2006. The shape here reflects what Western observers believed the aircraft looked like at the time rather than the production J-10A, which makes the kit an interesting artifact of the guessing game in its own right.
