The Bruckenleger IV b was a bridgelayer built on the Panzer IV chassis, developed by Krupp and issued in small numbers to the bridging columns of several Panzer divisions for the 1940 campaign in the West. The bridge was carried above the hull and swung forward into place, letting a division cross small waterways without waiting for engineer units. Only around twenty were completed, the bridge proved too light for the heavier tanks that followed, and most vehicles were converted back to gun tanks or engineer duties.
