The T-62 was the Soviet answer to a problem the T-55 could not solve: fitting a gun big enough to beat the next generation of Western armour. The result was the 115 mm U-5TS, the first smoothbore tank gun to enter service anywhere, mated to a stretched T-55 hull and a new cast turret. The Mod. 1972 added a 12.7 mm DShKM anti-aircraft mount on the loader's hatch. Some 20,000 were built and they saw combat in the Middle East, Afghanistan and beyond.
