The Karl-Gerät was one of the largest self-propelled artillery pieces ever built, a massive German siege mortar developed specifically for destroying heavily fortified positions. Six units were constructed and used in combat at Brest-Litovsk, Sevastopol, and Warsaw, firing either 60cm (Gerät 040) or 54cm (Gerät 041) shells weighing over two tonnes. Due to its enormous weight, the Karl-Gerät was transported between positions on a dedicated railway carrier flatcar, with a crane vehicle used to load and unload the mortar from the train.
