Chow Yun-Fat plays Ah Jong, a professional hitman for the Triads who accidentally blinds a nightclub singer named Jennie during a shootout. Wracked with guilt, he agrees to one final job to earn enough money to pay for her sight-restoring surgery. When he's double-crossed by his own syndicate, he finds an unlikely ally in Inspector Li Ying, the cop who's been hunting him — a man who turns out to be more similar to Ah Jong than either would like to admit.

The film is one of the defining works of the "heroic bloodshed" genre — operatic action sequences, slow-motion gun ballet, white doves, and a heavy undercurrent of honour, loyalty, and redemption. Woo has cited Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï and the work of Martin Scorsese as key influences.
