The Dewoitine D.520 was the best French fighter of 1940. It was fast and agile, with a 20mm Hispano cannon firing through the propeller hub and four wing machine guns. Few had reached squadrons before the German invasion in May, yet D.520 pilots scored heavily in the Battle of France. The type then served with Vichy, Free French and Axis air forces. Citroën's Traction Avant was launched in 1934 with front-wheel drive and a steel monocoque body, both far ahead of their time. The 11CV saloon became a familiar staff car with French forces and, after the fall of France, with German forces as well.
