The B-339 was the land-based export variant of the Brewster Buffalo, stripped of carrier equipment and fitted with a 1,100hp Wright Cyclone engine. RAF and Netherlands East Indies Army Air Corps (ML-KNIL) squadrons flew it in defence of Malaya, Singapore, and Java in the early months of the Pacific War, where it was quickly outclassed by the A6M Zero. Despite its limitations, it remained in frontline service through the desperate campaigns of late 1941 and early 1942.

Tamiya's 1/48 kit covers the Pacific Theatre variants with newly tooled parts distinguishing it from the earlier USN release.
