The de Havilland Mosquito was built largely of wood at a time when everyone else was building in metal, a decision that freed up aluminium supplies and drew on Britain's furniture industry. It was fast enough that early bomber versions dispensed with defensive armament entirely. The NF Mk.II was the first night fighter variant, carrying AI radar in the nose along with four cannon and four machine guns, and it gave the RAF a genuinely effective intruder from 1942. The FB Mk.VI took the same nose armament and added bomb bay and underwing loads, becoming the most produced Mosquito variant of all and the mount for the low level precision raids the type is remembered for.
