The Mikoyan MiG-29 was the Soviet Union's fourth generation air superiority fighter, first shown publicly in the West during a 1986 visit to Finland and displayed at Farnborough in 1988. Twin RD-33 turbofans and a blended lifting fuselage gave it high thrust to weight and notable low speed agility, and its intakes close on the ground with louvres above the wing roots feeding the engines to guard against debris ingestion. It became the standard fighter across the Warsaw Pact and was widely exported.
