The M3 Stuart entered US Army service in 1941 as a fast, well-armed light tank powered by a 250hp engine and armed with a 37mm main gun and multiple 7.62mm machine guns. Late production variants introduced a lowered cupola-less turret and a horseshoe-shaped turret design, with some examples having their sponson machine guns deleted to simplify production. The M3 fought under US colours in North Africa and was supplied in significant numbers to the Red Army via Britain under Lend-Lease, where Soviet forces used it extensively in reconnaissance and infantry support roles on the Eastern Front through to 1945.
