The Archer was a British self-propelled anti-tank gun that mounted the powerful 17-pounder gun on an elongated Valentine tank chassis. To fit the long gun into the low, cramped hull, it was mounted facing rearwards, so the Archer drove into position and fired back over its own engine deck, then drove forward to withdraw. It served with British and Commonwealth units from October 1944 to the end of the war and remained in British service into the early 1950s.
