The Sd.Kfz.222 was built for speed and reconnaissance rather than a fight. Four wheel drive, four wheel steering and a 75hp Horch V8 gave it 80km/h on roads, and the crew of three worked from an open-topped faceted turret carrying a 20mm cannon and a coaxial MG34. A folding wire mesh cover kept hand grenades out of the crew compartment. It served with the reconnaissance battalions of Panzer and motorised divisions across Europe and North Africa, effective at scouting so long as it did not have to absorb any punishment.
