The Sd.Kfz.223 was the radio car of the German reconnaissance battalions, built on the same four wheel drive Horch chassis as the 222 but trading the 20mm cannon for a medium wave set with roughly fifty kilometres of range. The large folding frame aerial over the hull is what gives it its unmistakable silhouette. Armed only with an MG34 in a small open-topped turret, it was there to see and report rather than fight, and the speed and cross-country ability of the chassis made it the eyes and ears of the Panzer divisions.
