The Marder III M was the final and most refined of the German Marder self-propelled anti-tank guns, built on the chassis of the obsolete Czech 38(t) tank by BMM in Prague. Where earlier Marders carried the gun over a central fighting compartment, the M variant moved the Praga engine to the middle of the hull and placed a low, armoured open-topped crew compartment at the rear, a rearrangement that made the vehicle easier to build and considerably easier to fight from. Some 942 were produced between May 1943 and June 1944, serving on every front until the purpose-built Hetzer took over the role.
