The 1941 invasion of Russia handed the Wehrmacht two things at once: the unpleasant discovery that its tanks were outclassed by the T-34, and warehouses full of captured Soviet 7.62cm field guns. Rechambered for German ammunition and redesignated Pak36(r), those guns could punch through 83mm of armour at a thousand metres. Bolting one onto the obsolete Czech-built Panzer 38(t) chassis behind a tall open-backed shield produced the Sd.Kfz.139, a stopgap tank hunter that was cramped, high and thinly protected, but which finally gave the anti-tank battalions something that could kill a T-34.
