The Volkswagen Kübelwagen Type 82 was the Wehrmacht's ubiquitous light utility vehicle, derived from Ferdinand Porsche's civilian Beetle design and produced in large numbers from 1940. Its air-cooled rear engine, torsion bar independent suspension, and lightweight body made it well-suited to a variety of theatres. For North Africa, a specialised variant was produced from 1942 fitted with Continental balloon tyres — both grooved and ungrooved versions — and a modified spare tyre mount on the bonnet to accommodate the wider wheel. Approximately 51,000 Kübelwagen of all variants were built by the end of the war. This 1999 Tamiya kit is an all-new tooling replacing the earlier release.
