The Panzer III was the backbone of the German tank arm through the first half of the war, and the Ausf.L is generally reckoned the most complete version of it. Production ran from June 1942, with 653 built, mounting the long 5cm KwK 39 L/60 and adding spaced appliqué armour to the hull front and gun mantlet. It fought alongside the new heavy types in Russia and North Africa, by then outgunned by the T-34 but still the vehicle that made up the numbers in the Panzer regiments.
