The Horch Type 1a (Kfz. 21) was the Wehrmacht's standard heavy cross-country personnel carrier, developed under the Einheits standardization program and produced by Auto-Union/Horch from 1937 to 1940. Powered by a V8 80 hp engine with four-wheel drive and three rows of seating for six, it saw wide service across all theatres as a staff car, signals vehicle, reconnaissance car, and weapons platform. The Steyr 1500A was later built to the same requirement, but the Horch remains the definitive Einheits heavy personnel carrier of the early war period.
