The M20 was an unarmed derivative of the M8 Greyhound armoured car, produced from 1943 by Ford with the turret removed and replaced by an open-top ring mount for an M2 heavy machine gun. Used extensively by US Army reconnaissance and headquarters units in the European Theatre, its six-wheeled drive and high road speed made it well suited to liaison, command, and prisoner transport roles. It served alongside the M8 in virtually every US armoured and cavalry formation through the end of the war.
