Description
TAM31435 - Tamiya 1/700 Waterline Series I-58 Late Ver. - WWHP111457
Preowned, Resealed, Mint
I-58 was a Type B-III fleet submarine of the Imperial Japanese Navy, laid down at Yokosuka Navy Yard in 1944 and equipped with a Type 0 E-14 reconnaissance seaplane and deck catapult for long-range surveillance. In her late-war configuration she was modified to carry six Kaiten — manned suicide torpedoes — on her outer deck. On 30 July 1945, I-58 attacked the US Navy heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis with a salvo of six conventional torpedoes, striking her with two and sinking her in approximately 15 minutes. The loss of the Indianapolis, and the subsequent delay in reporting her missing, resulted in one of the worst loss-of-life disasters in US Navy history.
