The Lotus 49 was the first F1 car built around the Ford Cosworth DFV engine, which was mounted as a fully stressed chassis member — a design philosophy that transformed Formula 1. Driven by Jim Clark and Graham Hill in 1967, it won on its debut at the Dutch Grand Prix and secured Lotus's place at the front of the grid for years to come.
