The M5 was a fully tracked American artillery tractor standardised in October 1942 and built by International Harvester from May 1943 to September 1945, with roughly 5,800 produced. It used the tracks, suspension, and running gear of the M3 light tank family, driven by a Continental R6572 six cylinder petrol engine, and served as the standard prime mover for the 105mm Howitzer M2, the 4.5 inch Gun M1, and the 155mm Howitzer M1, carrying the gun crew and ammunition as well as towing the piece. Surplus M5s went on to serve with Austria, Belgium, Japan, Yugoslavia, and Pakistan well after the war.
