The Bf 109E-1 was the initial production Emil variant deployed by the Luftwaffe's Legion Condor during the Spanish Civil War from 1938, giving German pilots and engineers invaluable combat experience against Soviet-supplied fighters supporting the Republicans. Operating under the cover unit designation J/88, Legion Condor Bf 109E pilots including future aces such as Hans Schmoller-Haldy and Adolf Galland honed the tactics and techniques that would define German fighter operations in the opening years of World War II. All aircraft in this boxing wear the distinctive RLM 63/65 two-tone scheme and Spanish Nationalist markings.
