The S.E.5a was one of the best British fighters of the First World War. H.P. Folland and John Kenworthy designed it at the Royal Aircraft Factory, and it reached the front in 1917. It was fast and stable, and it was strong enough to dive hard, with a synchronised Vickers gun in the fuselage and a Lewis gun on a Foster mount above the upper wing. The 200 hp Hispano-Suiza engine was unreliable, so Wolseley developed the Viper, a higher-compression version, which became the standard engine. More than 5,200 were built, and aces such as Mick Mannock, James McCudden and Billy Bishop flew them.
