The Heinkel He 51 was the first fighter delivered to the reborn Luftwaffe, a single seat biplane designed by Walter and Siegfried Gunter and first flown in 1933. The B.1 introduced strengthened structure and improved equipment over the earlier A series. From August 1936 the type served in Spain with the Legion Condor, where it was outclassed by Soviet supplied I-15 and I-16 fighters and was soon moved to ground attack and training duties.
