The Felixstowe F.2A was Britain's premier long-range flying boat of the First World War, flying gruelling six-hour patrols over the North Sea in search of U-boats and Zeppelins. When German Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 seaplane fighters began attacking from the flying boats' blind spots in 1918, one late-production F.2A, N4543, was fitted with an experimental gunner's position mounted in the middle of the upper wing, giving a full 360 degree field of fire. Delivered to No. 230 Squadron RAF in July 1918, N4543 attacked a U-boat within days of arriving and served until November 1918, and it wore one of the most spectacular dazzle schemes of the war.
