Tom Hoover was one of the great names of Funny Car racing. In a career of more than 35 years he drove some of the sport’s most famous nitro cars, including his “Showtime” machines of the 1970s. In the late 1990s Hoover raced this Pioneer Electronics-sponsored Dodge Avenger in NHRA Top Fuel Funny Car with team-mate Cory Lee, and he won the 1997 Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. Like every modern Funny Car, the Avenger hid a supercharged, nitromethane-burning Hemi under a one-piece carbon fibre body that lifted off to reach the engine.
