The Fulmar was the Fleet Air Arm's answer to a hard problem: a carrier fighter that also carried a navigator, at a time when finding your way back to a moving ship mattered as much as speed. It was slower than the land-based fighters it faced, but it was well armed with eight Browning machine guns, long-legged, and steady enough that Fulmars shot down more enemy aircraft than any other Fleet Air Arm type. They flew from Illustrious and Ark Royal on the Malta convoys and over the Mediterranean from 1940.
