The LSM class was developed in 1944 to fill the gap between the small LCT and the much larger LST, giving amphibious forces a beachable ship that could put tanks and vehicles directly onto a shore. More than 550 were built in around sixteen months, entering service from late 1944 and taking part in the Pacific landings through to the end of the war. Armed with 40 mm and 20 mm guns, LSMs also served in the Korean War and remained with allied navies into the late 1950s.
