The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, the big radial-engine "Jug" of WWII, was prized for its ruggedness and firepower. The P-47M was the fastest version to see combat, a high-speed interceptor variant capable of about 470 mph that served with the 56th Fighter Group in Europe in early 1945 and downed German Me 262 jets. Only around 130 were built.
