The George Washington class were the United States Navy's first ballistic missile submarines, created by inserting a missile compartment into the hull design of the Skipjack class attack boats. Each carried sixteen Polaris missiles that could be launched while submerged, and USS George Washington made the first successful submerged Polaris firing in July 1960. USS Abraham Lincoln, SSB(N) 602, was the fifth and last boat of the class, commissioned in March 1961.
